Real Estate Garden Photography: What to Prepare
Real estate garden photography for usable outdoor spaces. Prepare planting, paths, patios and seasonal context before the property shoot.

Real estate garden photography should explain the outdoor space people are considering, from a small courtyard to a larger garden. Tidy the areas to be photographed, identify the features that matter and show how the garden relates to the house. Avoid treating every flower or decorative object as a separate listing image.
A useful outdoor set can communicate where people sit, how they reach different areas and what they see from the home. The brief should reflect the garden’s actual condition and the campaign’s needs rather than an idealised season that is not present.
Identify the garden’s role in the campaign
Start with its practical features. Is the main appeal a covered patio, a lawn, established planting, a private courtyard or several connected outdoor areas? Explain the priorities to the photographer. A photograph from the house towards the garden can tell a different story from a photograph looking back towards the building.
If a particular structure or space is included, confirm how it is described. Do not infer a boundary, exclusive use or approval status from appearance alone. Ask the agent to provide accurate context for shared areas and anything whose relationship to the property could be unclear.
Prepare paths and seating areas
Remove loose gardening equipment, packaging and portable clutter from the included spaces. Straighten outdoor furniture and check cushions or table surfaces. Keep walking routes clear for the session without creating a display that blocks access.
Arrange ordinary gardening work in advance if it is part of the preparation plan. Do not expect the photographer to landscape the property during the appointment. If major work remains unfinished, discuss whether the campaign needs a later session or an honest representation of the current condition.
Keep safety fixtures and barriers in their proper state. A photograph is not a reason to bypass a gate, shift a barrier or climb onto garden structures.
Use the season honestly
Tell us when planting is expected to look different from its current state, but brief the actual shoot around what is there. If old garden photographs are being considered, ask the agent whether they still accurately represent the property and how they should be contextualised.
NSW Fair Trading’s photographic advertising guidance warns about old images that no longer give an accurate impression. That is a useful check before reusing a previous spring photograph in a new campaign. The relevant local requirements should also be considered for the property’s jurisdiction.
Do not ask for planting, lawn or a permanent feature to be digitally added as though it already exists. A separate landscape concept is a different kind of material and needs appropriate review and presentation.
Consider privacy and neighbouring spaces
Look for personal items, visible names and views into neighbouring areas. Discuss compositions that keep attention on the advertised property. Clear the part of the indoor room visible through an open door, as well as the garden itself.
If access to a shared courtyard or managed garden is needed, organise it before the shoot. State whether the area is private, communal or nearby so the eventual image captions can be accurate. Avoid implying that an attractive neighbouring garden belongs to the property.
Select a balanced set
Review whether the garden images explain different features or simply repeat similar planting. Include the relationship with the home where useful. If the garden is one part of a larger property media brief, make sure the selection remains proportionate to the rest of the listing.
Send us the suburb, property type, outdoor features and intended timing. We can discuss how garden photography fits into the session and confirm any access or weather-dependent arrangements before a date is agreed.
