Real Estate Kitchen Photography: Preparation Guide
Real estate kitchen photography preparation for benches, appliances, lighting and room connections. Create a clear and accurate listing brief.

Real estate kitchen photography should show the kitchen’s layout, surfaces and connection to the home. Clean visible finishes, simplify the benches and decide which features deserve attention before the shoot. A few purposeful views usually communicate more than a long set of repetitive close-ups.
Prepare the kitchen as part of the property’s overall presentation. A highly styled island beside an unfinished living room can make the photograph set feel inconsistent. Agree the general approach with the campaign contact before introducing props or moving furniture.
Start with the working surfaces
Clear everyday paperwork, food packaging and loose charging cables from benches. Put washing-up supplies and portable appliances away if they distract from the surfaces or obscure a feature the campaign wants to show. Leave essential equipment in its proper position; preparation should not suggest a different fitted kitchen.
Clean the splashback, cupboard fronts and visible appliance surfaces. Check the island from both sides, including any stools and the area underneath. Reflective surfaces deserve a final look because they can reveal cleaning products, people or clutter outside the main view.
If the kitchen is still being repaired or installed, tell us. Photography is not a substitute for completing the work, and editing should not conceal the property’s actual condition.
Decide what the kitchen photograph needs to explain
Useful questions include how the kitchen connects to dining, whether an island provides seating, and where the main preparation space sits. A view that includes a doorway or adjoining room may answer those questions better than a close-up of an appliance.
List any specific feature that matters to the campaign, such as a pantry, separate preparation area or serving opening. Confirm how it can be shown without creating an awkward or misleading impression of the space. If a feature cannot be understood in a still photograph, a floor plan or a separate detail view may help.
Keep styling proportionate
Choose a small number of objects that suit the room rather than filling every clear surface. Keep sightlines across the island and through the kitchen open. Straighten stools and chairs, but avoid arranging furniture in a way that blocks access or would not be practical for the session.
Remove personal items from fridge fronts, noticeboards and open shelves if they reveal names, schedules or other private details. The OAIC’s tenancy guidance specifically highlights household belongings that could reveal personal information in advertising photographs. This is useful to consider in an owner-occupied home too, without assuming the same legal circumstances apply to every property.
Discuss lighting and reflective finishes
Tell the photographer about lighting that is not working and any limits on when blinds or curtains can be moved. Avoid promising a particular window view or effect before the actual room has been assessed. Chrome, glass and glossy cupboards can reflect parts of the room that are not obvious when preparing it.
Turn distracting displays off where appropriate, with the household’s agreement. Do not unplug essential appliances simply to hide a cable. If lighting or an appliance requires a technician’s attention, arrange that separately.
Review the kitchen within the complete set
When reviewing the delivered selection, check that the kitchen’s role is clear and that the views are not unnecessarily repetitive. Confirm that colour and visible finishes reasonably represent the property. Raise corrections using file names and a specific description of the concern.
Tell us about the property, the kitchen features that matter and whether photography is being combined with video or a floor plan. We can discuss a coherent brief and confirm availability for the intended campaign.
